When the Künstlerhaus was built in 1885 the aim was on the one hand to have a permanent exhibition area and a secretariat for the Kunstverein, and on the other hand to provide ateliers for artists. During the 1970s, when the building was extensively renovated, six new ateliers combined with apartments were built above the existing exhibition area.
Allocation of the ateliers
Alltogether 24 ateliers, 20 are allocated exclusively to Kunstverein members, usually for three years with the possibility of extending the term for one period. In case of availability all members are informed. A jury consisting of representatives of the board decides on their allocation.
For several years now the city and state of Salzburg have each provided a guest atelier for artists.
