October Talks: Sobey Art Award

European Launch of the Sobey Art Award by Josée Drouin-Brisebois, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Canada

Josée Drouin-Brisebois will present the history and parameters of this outstanding award for Canadian artists, as well as share the work of the five short-listed artists for 2018: Joi T. Arcand, Jordan Bennett, Kapwani Kiwanga, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Jon Rafman. As one of the world’s most prestigious contemporary art prizes with a total of $240,000 in prize money, the Sobey Art Award is presented annually to a visual artist aged under 40.

The short-listed artists were selected from a long list of 25 nominees by an international jury. Chaired by Josée Drouin-Brisebois, the jury includes Heather Igloliorte, Concordia University Research Chair in Indigenous Art History; Jean-François Bélisle, Executive Director, Musée d’art de Joliette; November Paynter, Director of Programs, Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada; Kristy Trinier, Executive Director at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery; Melanie O’Brian, Director, Simon Fraser University Galleries; and international juror, Séamus Kealy, Director, Salzburger Kunstverein.

The winner of the Sobey Art Award will be announced at an award ceremony held 14 November 2018. The five short-listed artists will also be exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada from 3 October 2018 and 10 February 2019.

The presentation is followed by a drinks reception. Everyone welcome.

Josée Drouin-Brisebois is responsible for the collections of Canadian and international contemporary art at the National Gallery of Canada. She organized the Canadian participation at the 2011 and 2013 Venice Biennales and was the Project Director for Canadian participation at the 2017 edition. She has curated numerous exhibitions, including monographs of senior Canadian artists Chris Cran (2016), Arnaud Maggs (2012) and Christopher Pratt (2005), as well as several thematic group exhibitions.
