Tatjana Danneberg

Opening: Fri, 7 May 2021, 6pm

Tatjana Danneberg’s artistic practice is eventful. It unravels somewhat accidentally as it is determined by media and techniques layered one upon the other. With simple analogue compact cameras, the artist documents everyday life by capturing friends, acquaintances or her partner in familiar, often intimate shots as a kind of quasi-casual memory. These photographs specifically show moments in which an action or the lack of action manifests itself. Her protagonists, whose identities are often difficult to recognise, seem to elude reality or even completely annul it.

The artist is concerned with the nature of images today and the possibilities that can unfold through their manipulation and deconstruction. Danneberg’s approach to painting is determined by a profoundly material and process-based experimentation. Her work asks, how can one paint with pictures? Triggered by deliberate body movements and fragmented brushstrokes, the photographic image becomes gestural and thus transforms into expressive painting. The image dissolves, becomes formable and is reconfigured on the canvas by the body, its power and its intuitive movements. The artist’s body thus, we can say, functions here as a decoding tool that disperses antagonism between photography and painting, which are normally and historically at odds with each other. (Attilia Fattori-Franchini)

For her exhibition at the Salzburger Kunstverein―her first solo presentation at a public institution―she will be presenting new work. Her first catalogue is also currently in production to accompany the exhibition.

Tatjana Danneberg studied Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (2011-2017), including spending 2014 and 2015 at the Städelschule―Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Frankfurt am Main. Her practice includes a blend of large-scale painting combined with various photographic processes, as well as sculptural work. Tatjana Danneberg (*1991, Austria) lives and works between Vienna and Warsaw.
