CANCELLED! Artist Talk: Nicolaus Schafhausen & Borjana Ventzislavova

Tue, 18 June 2019, 6.30pm

The artist talk is cancelled due to illness. Thank you for your understanding.

Nicolaus Schafhausen speaks with Borjana Ventzislavova about her artwork and current politics.

At present Borjana Ventzislavova is showing her film, And the Sky Clears Up (MAGIC RESISTANCE) in the Salzburger Kunstverein. Five female protagonists perform magic spells in Vienna, mostly in sites renowned for events from the Nazi period. By documenting these different processes (and perhaps thus magnifying them), the film altogether acts as a plea for conjuring resistance to the current right-wing populism in the Western Hemisphere. The depicted individual ceremonies, none of which arise from dogmatism nor official religions, demonstrate the protagonists’ appeal to healing, empowerment and solidarity as symbolic and even actual political action.

Borjana Ventzislavova (*1976, Sofia) lives and works in Vienna.

Nicolaus Schafhausen (*1965) is a curator and art manager. He was Director of the Kunsthalle Wien from 2012 to 2018. In autumn 2019 he will commence his position as a curator at the Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism.
